Question: Replacing rear breaks for a 1988 325-- cost?

I am thinking about buying a 1988 325i, 168,000 miles, for $2700. Everything is in good working order, minus the rear breaks which the owner admits are in need of replacing.

Pads, or rotors? If pads, $100-150 at a mechanic, and an easy DIY job. If rotors, not so easy DIY and expect a $500 bill, give or take.

If the brakes feel iffy, then at this age it might be the brake lines getting old and spongy rather than the pads. New lines are cheap to buy, but are not easy to replace DIY because the brake fluid is nasty stuff and difficult to dispose of, plus bleeding them of air properly once the new ones are in is difficult if you're doing it for the first time. All in, I've been charged 2-3 hours of labor +$50-100 in parts for this replacement job.
