Hi there! With my 2007 Yaris Sedan S, I would have on average 35 mpg on highway and surface driving. On highway driving only, it would be slightly higher at 38 mpg. However, I really believe the MPG advertised for the Yaris is too high because I had to work to get these rates. The problem isn't the car, it's the inaccurate reporting of the mpg. There's an article from CarAndDriver.com entitled 'We Need Accurate MPG Tests' regarding how it's measured and should explain things.

In the end, getting mileage higher than 30mpg isn't unachievable. YMMV, but you may be able to do it with some changes.

For my Yaris the changes I made were not that difficult: I always made sure the tires were in tip top shape, went for regular maintenance, had nothing in the trunk to weigh the car down, avoided using a/c in the city, and kept a constant speed (under the speed limit) on the highway by using the cruise control. As I lived in Los Angeles, the one thing that hurt my mpg was the constant stop-and-go when in traffic jams - I learned to deal with this by keeping a big space in front of the car to avoid sudden braking. Worked for me, might not for others. Meanwhile there's also plenty of sites out there that will point you in the right direction for tips on increasing your mileage.
